Young Africa Designs

Aaaahhhh.... the young African fashion designers (by young, I mean anywhere from 18 - 45 years old, lol...) are creating some incredible clothes.  I saw some innovative designs by Africans, online, that made my mouth drop.  There are some fantastic ideas in terms of silhouettes ( take a look at Blacktrash designs for example.... yes, the name astounded me, but the clothing is phenomenal...) and there are lovely combinations of fabrics, colors and prints.   Applause!

Somalian Twins Design: Mataano

Ayaan and Idyl are fashion designing twin sisters from Somalia who came to the U.S. at the age of nine.  They completed college and both were interns for famous fashion designers.  Ayaan interned for Jill Stuart, and Idyl interned for Betsy Johnson.

The twins' first collection of ten dresses was introduced in 2009. Their brand name, Mataano, is a Somali name which means twins.  How appropriate!  To Idyl and Ayaan, the Mataano woman is a mixture of different cultural influences.

Inspiration: African Designers

We're all hearing about the terrible famine hitting the Horn of Africa, which includes Somalia and parts of Kenya.  It's devastating! I decided to look for Somalian fashion designers (I discovered a pair of twin designers, no, not the Olsen twins...) and got sidetracked looking at wonderful clothing by other African designers.  This post is for Somalia and Kenya.  I'll have to follow up on the Somalian designers next week.

When one views fashion from other countries/continents, there's a whole new and fresh look to fashion.  I've got to post pictures from other countries in the future blogs.

Kudos for African Designers

According to one website, African fashion designers are on the cusp of going international.  No wonder.  There's a great amount of talented designers creating beautiful garments with both traditional and international fabrics and silhouettes.I was in heaven looking at the designs online!  Some of the designers have already shown their lines at fashion weeks in South Africa.

This is just a taste of the art coming out of Africa.  Some names of top African designers the rest of the world has to be introduced to:  ChiaChialondon, Tiffany Amber, David Tlale, Thula Sindi, Deola Sagoe, St. Genevieve, Christie Brown, and Marie Christine Quenneville.  Google each name to see their work.  You won't be disappointed!
