From Areas in Emergency: Focus on Designers

What a summer!  Fires, hurricanes and earthquakes!  Summer is technically over September 22, 2017, and I hope nothing else catastrophic will be happening.

For those recovering from the disasters that have happened, and are still happening, in British Columbia, Canada (wildfires), Texas (hurricane Harvey) and Florida  and some Caribbean islands (hurricane Irma), designers from each area are featured this week.

Tiffany Amber design, Florida, US.

League of Rebels, Texas, US

Allison Smith design, British Columbia, Canada

Calvin Southwell design, Antigua, Carribean

Praying for the quick restoration of each province, state, and island.  Till next blog.

Fashion Through the Decades

Fashion has changed so much over the centuries, but not as much as it's changed between 1900 and 2000.  Clothes can show a few things about a person such as economic status, the type of music genre preferred, even what faith you may be.

Today, African American fashion spanning seven decades is spotlighted.  Enjoy!

Spring Splendour

Spring is here, somewhat.  The beginning of April has been colder than usual (in Toronto, ON at least.  How's warm/cold is your location?) but let's look forward to what we could be wearing once the warm temperatures decide to visit us.

These clothing designs give strong spring vibes.  The bright colors, flowery prints, and silhouettes can't help but make you smile and feel the soon coming warmth.

Recycle the Fashionable Way

Plastic bags have a few uses.  One of which is to make clothing. Now, these plastic garments, most likely, are made for artistic reasons, unless the plastic has been mixed with materials that allow air to circulate.  But I'm sure 100% plastic clothes can be worn in cold weather, or for a short period of time during warm weather.  Now you know what else you can use those plastic bags for.

Men in Color

The men in color in this post are entertainers that we're familiar with.  It's refreshing to see men experiment with wearing colors as well as white clothes.  I'd like to see more men  in my neighborhood do the same thing.

The Facts of Life Facts of Fashion

I'm an absolute fan of The Facts of Life television series.  I remember waiting eagerly for the new episode to air each week. I loved the quality of the program, the characters, the school setting.  I was just telling a friend yesterday that I can't pick a favorite character; I like all the characters equally on the show.  The personalities are different, but they work well together.  I also loved to see what clothes Jo, Tootie, Natalie, Blair and Mrs. Garrett would wear each week. Especially Blair.  She was the fashionista.

The girls behind the characters are women now, and they have their own unique fashion sensibilities.  The facts of fashion for all of them is to be comfortable and classy.

Men's Wedding Wear

I don't know why I didn't think of this idea in the past.  Aren't men interested in what to wear to their wedding as well?  Wedding wear for men, just as women, varies from the 3 - piece suit to just shirt and slacks for the very casual celebration.  Anything goes.  Just dress for your personality and venue.

A Touch of Faux Leather

I love the fashion fad of faux leather combined with fabric.  It makes for a very appealing garment, and it's popular this season.  I've been seeing a lot of dresses with a touch of the faux leather detail.  There are other clothing pieces incorporating this leather look fabric for both men and women.

Mandela Tribute Fashion Style

Mr. Nelson Mandela passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013.  Sad day, although, at his age, we know he would soon pass.  A wise and intelligent man of good character and integrity who loved people.

The South African fashion designers featured below (they are just a few of many) may not have become as successful as they have today if it wasn't for Mr.Nelson Mandela and others fighting for their rights to be treated as equals.  This post is in memory of him.

Designs by Project Runway Alumni

Ever wonder what previous Project Runway contestants are up to?  What they're designing, or if they're still designing?  I do occasionally.  I've been searching in vain for which channels in the Toronto/GTA area (I live in Ontario, Canada) would show Project Runway season 11. Season 12 is being aired now in the US, so Canada, as far as I know, is a season behind.  So I've resorted to watching my old VHS tapes of previous seasons of Project Runway (yes, I still have a VCR!  If it ain't broke, don't replace it, at least don't throw it out, lol).

I remember the good old days of watching seasons 1 to 10 on first Bravo then the Slice channel.  Which led me to wondering what previous contestants were up to now, or shortly after completing the show.  Here are some lovely designs by 5 previous contestants from Project Runway seasons 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Excellent work!  Here's to hoping that the parts of Canada that are deprived of Project Runway 11 will soon be able to see it or purchase the dvd.
