What's the Material?

The first time I believe I saw a garment made from atypical material was on Project Runway.  It fascinated me that unusual items could be manipulated into clothes with an extraordinary flare.  I have yet to try making something using the unusual, but I think about it.

Found some fascinating designs made with objects with other original uses.  Lovely and time consuming work!

Mandela Tribute Fashion Style

Mr. Nelson Mandela passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013.  Sad day, although, at his age, we know he would soon pass.  A wise and intelligent man of good character and integrity who loved people. 

The South African fashion designers featured below (they are just a few of many) may not have become as successful as they have today if it wasn't for Mr.Nelson Mandela and others fighting for their rights to be treated as equals.  This post is in memory of him.

Looking Ahead to Spring 2014

 I viewed some videos showing collections for spring 2014 presented at  Fashion Week in New York, Milan, Paris and London.  I'd say overall, the design influences are the 60's and the 70's with a twist.  I don't have a problem with that at all.  

You know when you see something that just gets your attention, causes you to think "Wow!"?  These dresses did that for me. They're so unusual and lovely and feminine.  I'm not sure if I see 60's and 70's influence portrayed in these dresses though; correction - I do see a bit of these decades' influences.   I also see dresses that are trail blazers and will influence future designers.

That Bohemia Feeling...

How was your holiday?  Mine was good and unexpectedly busy during the last week of 2010.  Now the new year is here; I didn't even make any New Years resolutions like I used to do.  I'm going to just work on a few of my goals plus wait to see what comes.  And for those of you that may have read my blog last week, I wore a loose black blouse, a beige shirt jacket, and a "salt and pepper" calf length straight cut skirt to the New Years Eve service (I took my teens to a church concert.  It was excellent!).  Not my first choice of what I would like to wear, but I had less than two hours to find something to put on.

Yesterday I was thinking on how 2011 should be clothes-wise.  I'm feeling ease of movement in clothing is key.  I'm thinking loose and light fabrics.  I'm thinking expressive clothing.  I'm thinking color (don't I always think color?) to express hopefulness for the future and a passion for one's beliefs.  Bohemia!  I can also see people wearing semi-structured  clothing in colors such as grey, white, black and taupe.  To each his own.  Here are a few of bohemian clothing I've taken a liking to:

Sew, Sew, Sew!

Another weekend is here.  Can't believe it!  It seems like I was just watching Project Runway a few days ago.(It's on Saturday nights in the Toronto/GTA area.  That's in Ontario Canada for non-Canadians...)

I'm still working on a couple of New Year's resolutions.  One was to excercise more, and one was to post more pictures of my work.  Well, I'm doing those.  I feel accomplished!

I've completed a few projects this week.  I've made two samples of my daughter's blouse design, part of her 5 piece spring and summer mini line of clothing.  One blouse is sleeveless, and the other has big puff sleeves.  There's a drawstring hem thing going on with me.  I like them.   I haven't started making patterns for my mini line as yet.  I was coming home one afternoon from helping my friend prepare for her fashion show, and I had a sudden inspiration of what my fall and winter 5 piece line would be.  I may skip my spring and summer line and work on fall/winter!  What I would be designing is futuristic, millenium, whatever word you want to call 21st century clothes.

This pink bag I love, but when I tested it's function, it didn't pass the test!  What do I have to do now?  I'll have to stiffen the clothe bag more with more interfacing and lengthen the flap closure.  A weightier fabric would do the trick.  Haven't given up yet.  The style is so pretty.  This is bag number 5! 

I found a blue t-shirt in my storage room and was just looking at it wondering what to do with it.  Started cutting the sleeves off Thursday night.  Transpired into this on Friday.  Love it!  The design is absolutely organic.  It also has a drawstring hem.  I like the flower detailing.  I'm going to make more in different sizes.

Defining Fashion of the 1990's

When I think about the 1990's in terms of fashion, I have a hard time defining the fashion of this decade.  Maybe it was because, during this time, several decades' styles influenced the fashion of the 1990's .  That's just my opinion.

In the beginning of the 1990's, fashion took its cue from the 1920's, 1960's and the 1980's.  These decades shaped the style for men, women and children's clothing.  Neon colors were in.  Vests, cardigans, and polo shirts became popular again.  Remember the tight skirts worn with a longer jacket?  I wore those.  Silk tank tops had to be a part of any woman's wardrobe.  I had a few babydoll tank dresses that I wore with or without leggings.  The decade was the lycra and fleece decade.

 

The 1970's inspired clothing were popular in the mid to end of the 1990's with the return of polyester print shirts for women.  Later, fitted t-shirts started to shrink from the waist up, as jeans shrunk from the waist down (low-rise jeans) to show many teen girls and women's bellies.  Baggy pants and hoodies were popular among the hip hop crowd and the grunge look (dark clothing and skater shoes) was adopted by others.

This is some of what was worn during the 1990's. This explains why I could never identify in one sentence what defined the fashion of this decade.  It was a lot of fun dressing during this period in time, though.
